Wow! This movie is breathtaking. The vivid imagery. The powerful music. The intense drama. I never dreamed that this movie would offer so much. I just cannot express my adoration of this film. Furthermore, I would like to applaud Dreamwork's for having the boldness to invest in a Bible story, and for having the maturity to not turn it into a farce.
The movie opens with a flourishing Egypt, and an enslaved Hebrew people. The familiar scene of baby Moses floating down the river in a basket comes to life, and the story begins. We then see Moses as a young adult with his "brother" Rameses. As a side note, the chariot race between these two was awesome. It was of a Star Wars caliber. Eventually Moses learns of his true ancestry and leaves Egypt. The film follows his eventual return to Egypt along with his leading the Hebrews out of Egypt. We also get to witness the parting of the Red Sea (AMAZING!). The movie ends with his walk down the mountain with two tablets in hand. If you've read the Bible, you'll likely agree with me that this was the perfect ending for this movie.
The movie's cast was as good as the rest of the film. I especially enjoyed Jeff Goldblum being cast as as Aaron, the brother of Moses. His voice is the best. I thought it would be neat to list the voice cast members:
I would like to point out that this movie is not one intended for an audience composed entirely of children. It really was intended for everyone in mind. And I urge everyone to see it. There has been much criticism that this movie does not cater to children enough. That it is too adult-oriented and that there should be more "cuddly" characters. I do not join in this sentiment. I feel that the movie is very close to perfect and that trying to make it more appealing to children would:
a) ruin the story, and
b) make the movie unappealing to all.
This does not mean however that you should keep your children from seeing the film or that a family should shy away from seeing this movie just because it is not a purely made-for-kids movie. On the contrary, I took my soon-to-be 4-year-old to see it and she quite enjoyed it.
Purely phenomenal! I just cannot come up with enough accolades.
