I kid you not, but I have imagined such a situation as this long before the movie was ever made. That is, that everyone I knew were just hired actors and that I was the only one being myself. However, I did not consider as many of the ramifications of such a situation as The Truman Show does. For me, this movie was as much a thought provoker as it was a comedy.
Basically, Jim Carrey plays Truman Brubank, who was adopted by a television studio for the sole purpose of broadcasting his entire life to the world without his knowledge. Everyone in his life (his parents, his best friend, and even his wife) are actors hired by the studio, and every situation is controlled by the tyrannical producer of the show, played by Ed Harris. This setup provides for many comical situations as well as providing triumphant calls for knowledge and freedom and honesty.
Although Jim Carrey displayed his silliness at times, he used this movie to prove the point that he can be a serious actor too. For much of the movie the faces that he was making were not caricatures or cartoonish impressions but those of a TRUE MAN (yes, the pun was indeed intended).
This movie displayed many themes that were not comedic at all. For instance, Truman's longing for the girl pictured to the right was truly touching. He would cut out eyes, ears, noses, foreheads, mouths, and other facial parts from magazines and paste them together in order to form a picture of his forbidden love.
Ed Harris was the antagonist of the movie as the creator and producer of The Truman Show (the show in the movie, not the movie of the show). It was interesting when he talked to Jim at the end of the movie, broadcasting his voice from the artificial sky, and proclaiming "Truman. Do not be afraid. I am the Creator...
of a television show in which you are the star." I wonder if Harris' character had a power trip?
My favorite part of the movie was that guy in the bathtub. What was that? When he was hanging from the shower curtain while Truman was in the storm, I was laughing and laughing and laughing.
See it. It's good.
